types of rocks and minerals
Rocks are made of minerals, but minerals are not made of rocks. A mineral is a naturally formed, inorgranic soild that has a definite cystalline structure. There is two types of minerals. One type of mineral is Silicate Minerals, silicon and oxygen are the two most common elements in the Earths crust. Silicate minerals are minerals that contain a combination of these two elements. Another mineral that is in the mineral group is Nonsilic minerals, which are minerals that do not contain a combination of the elements, silicon and oxygen. The common Silicate mineras are Quartz, Feldspar, Mica. The common Nonsilicate Minerals are Native elements, Oxides, Carbonates, Sulfates, Halides, and Sulfides. How you would identify minerals is by Color, Luster, Streak, Cleavage and Fractue, Hardness, and Density. Each of them have a way to identify minerals. There are 3 types of main rocks. One of them is Igneous Rock. Igneous Rock froms when hot, liquid rock, or magma, cools and soildifies. The type of igneous rock that forms depeneds on the conpostion of the magma and the amount of time it takes the magma to cool. Another main rock is Sedimentary Rock. Sedimentary Rock is a product of sand and weathering, which breaks rocks into pieces. Over, time, sand grains may be compacted, or compressed, and then cemented together to form a rock called sandstone. Sandstone is just on eof the many types of sedimentary rock. The last mayor rock is Metamorphic Rock. Metamorphic Rock is a rock that can also go through a process called metamorphism. The word metamorphism come from the Greek words "meta" which means changed , "morphos" which means shape. Metamorphic rocks are in which the structure, texture, or compostition of rock have changed. All three types of ricks can be changed by hear, pressure, or a combination of both.
